MID-BACK – RIBS – DIAPHRAGM
Unlock that slight bend forwards
realign ribs & free diaphragm.
Problem:
Mid-back vertebra (thoracic) tend to bend too far forward, exaggerating their natural anatomical curve, making it more difficult for diaphragm to expand, and slightly twisting rib ends (posterior head & tubercle). Gradually the mid-back (thoracic region) becomes stiff & stuck in this overly-forward-bending posture; indefinitely constricting lung expansion, curving shoulders forward, & restricting mobility.
Treatment:
Thoracic muscle fibers must be loosened, de-adhered & usually moved upward (toward head). Often, these muscles are in a state of constant trauma, have been in state of mild spasm for months or years, and though they no longer produce constant pain any sudden movement sends them into painful spasms. One Fluidification treatment is significantly helpful, but mid-back muscles need time to restore flexibility to cells and stretch back out; which means waiting at least 2-3 weeks between treatments.
Twisted ribs are exceedingly painful, are often described as
feeling like a knife is stabbing into one's torso, and are commonly mistaken by the sufferer for heart pain. This is because the muscles between ribs (intercostals) are spasmed and won't relax,
prevent one from taking deep breaths. Everyone experiences this sooner or later. Twisted ribs must be untwisted & correctly reseated in vertebra facets, which is painful, but the only sure way to
lasting relief from pain. If one waits until the spasms finally subside, without ever reseating ribs in facets, the pain will go away, but the spasms will always eventually
return.
Benefits:
-
mid-back vertebra sit properly upright, aren’t always falling forward.
-
restores mid-back (thoracic) arch to anatomically correct position.
-
untwists ribs that cause sharp muscle spasms.
-
restores proper rib-vertebra joint contact (tubercle/head to facet articulation).
-
increases rib mobility, like individual fingers instead of a stiff birdcage.
-
ends acute vulnerability to upper-back spasms.
-
diaphragm expands more easily.
-
lungs expand more easily, breathing is easier.
-
better air-flushing action means healthier lungs, less problem with allergies.
-
helps rotate shoulder joints backwards, more upright.
Notes:
In some people thoracic muscles are continuously inflamed, as if one received a blow to the back that never healed, and now muscles spasm too easily & too often.
The long term health and integrity of the mid-back vertebral arch (thoracic) is dependent upon the integrity of the low-back vertebral arch (lumbar). Most mid-back therapy should include some low back therapy.
Breathing should be an easy fluid movement. Your diaphragm should effortlessly expand and contract to its elastic limits.
Unfortunately many people’s rib cages have become rigid and unmovable, like a birdcage. The diaphragm can’t fully expand. This restricts air flow through lung tissues. Low level infections often live for years in the parts of the lungs where the airflow flushing function is most restricted.
Diaphragm work usually frees core-defense-posture holding patterns and should also be thought of as a psychological health therapy.
What women often mistake as breast pain is often intercostal lumps or fascial bunching, treatable adhesions that lie between ribs and breasts.
Young people with scoliosis need to de-adhere and relocate muscles clumped and overgrown on one side of vertebra column; when done before a major growth spurt, vertebra column often straightens out.
